Borobudur Temple

Borobudur Temple is one of the wonders of the world, recognized by UNESCO, and it located in the beautiful Menoreh Hills. Built in the early 8th century by the Syailendra Dynasty, this Buddhist monument lay buried and forgotten for over 1,000 years before being rediscovered by Sir Thomas Stanford Raffles in 1814.
Architectural Wonders & Restoration History
Borobudur is a magnificent architectural masterpiece. Despite its solid condition, only about 80% of the structure has been restored. Two major restorations were undertaken: the first in 1907-1911 and the second, at a staggering cost of US$25 million, in 1972-1983. Some of the temple's stonework was lost or stolen during the colonial period, but its beauty and grandeur remain intact.
Spiritual Journey & Panoramic Beauty
The temple has four entrances, all of which lead pilgrims to the top of the stupa. At the summit, 72 small stupas with Buddha statues inside surround the large main stupa. One of the Buddha statues is believed to bring good luck to anyone who touches it.
From the top of the temple, visitors are treated to breathtaking panoramic views. Borobudur is surrounded by iconic mountains such as Menoreh, Merapi, Merbabu, Sumbing, and Sindoro, creating the perfect backdrop for a breathtaking sunrise or sunset. Borobudur is not only a pilgrimage site, but also a living testament to the perfect blend of spirituality and natural beauty.
