Merapi Trekking

Mount Merapi Trekking, one of Indonesia's most active volcanoes, is an adventure that not only challenges you physically but also captivates you with its breathtaking natural scenery. Located on the border of Central Java and Yogyakarta, Merapi offers a stunning trekking experience with two popular main routes: via Kaliurang and via Selo.
Kaliurang Route (Yogyakarta)
This route begins from Kaliurang village in Sleman, about 27 km north of Yogyakarta, at an altitude of 900 meters above sea level. A round-trip hike on this route takes approximately four hours. You'll pass through the cool forest among the Turgo Hills, enjoying the fresh air, serene views, and diverse flora. Several small huts are available along the way for resting and enjoying a warm drink. This hike is ideal for enjoying nature, even though it doesn't reach the summit of the active crater.
Selo Trail (Boyolali)
The Selo Trail, located in Boyolali, Central Java, about 70 km from Yogyakarta, is the main base camp at an altitude of 1,200 meters above sea level. Hikes via this trail usually begin early in the morning (around 12:30 AM) with the primary goal of witnessing the beautiful sunrise from the summit. The climb to the summit takes about 5 hours, while the descent takes about 3 hours. From the summit, you'll be treated to stunning panoramic views of other mountains such as Lawu, Merbabu, Sumbing, and Sindoro. Temperatures at the summit can be quite cold, around 10 degrees Celsius.
Whichever trail you choose, adequate physical preparation and equipment are essential. Hiking boots, a shirt, and a warm jacket are recommended (jeans are not recommended). Throughout the trek, you'll be accompanied by an experienced local guide who will ensure your safety and provide insights into Merapi. Climbing Merapi is an unforgettable experience, offering a deep connection with nature and the power of the earth.
