Ijo Temple

It located atop the Green (Ijo) hills in Sambirejo Village, Prambanan, Ijo Temple is the highest Hindu temple in Yogyakarta. At approximately 410 meters above sea level, it's not only a historical site but also a prime spot for stunning views of the city and the sunset.

Built between the 9th and 10th centuries during the Ancient Mataram Kingdom, Ijo Temple is a temple complex dedicated to the god Shiva. The complex consists of a main temple and three ancillary temples facing west. While not as large as Prambanan, Ijo Temple's uniqueness lies in its strategic location.

Ijo Temple's main attraction is its 360-degree panoramic views. From its summit, visitors can see expanses of green rice fields, villages, the Adisutjipto Airport runway, and even the sparkling lights of Yogyakarta city in the distance. This view reaches its peak at dusk, when the sun slowly sets, creating a sky streaked with hues of orange and red. This moment is one of the most sought-after by photographers and tourists.

Although access to the temple requires a bit of a climb, the effort is well worth it with the views and peaceful atmosphere. Candi Ijo is the perfect place to escape the hustle and bustle of the city, contemplate, or simply enjoy the beauty of nature and history combined in one place.
